28 still missing as death toll from Philippines floods soars to 44
Over 50,000 people were forced to leave their homes while the damage to infrastructure and crops exceeds 22.9 million euros in value
Countless disasters and dozens victims leave behind the deadly floods and landslides in the Philippines.
Entire villages have been submerged in the mud while 44 people have so far been reported dead and 28 are still missing.
The damage to infrastructure and crops is estimated to reach a value of 1.36 billion pesos (22.9 million euros), according to the same source.
Over 50,000 people forced to flee their homes in the Visayas and Mindanao regions, where entire communities and highways were flooded.
The flood waters have receded, but rainfall continues sporadically, causing new problems.
The country’s president, Ferdinand Marcos, said he plans to visit the region to assess the situation after his planned visit to China.
“Unfortunately, the rain continues” and “we have to be careful in other areas as well”, he stressed, according to a statement from his services.
The Philippines is among the countries in the world characterized as most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Scientists have warned that the storms that hit the archipelago every year will become increasingly fierce as the temperature of the planet rises.
