Microsoft is investing in the artificial intelligence of ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence bot that has caused a global frenzy and the company behind it, the promising OpenAI, which is likely to replace even Google Search.
However, Microsoft declined to disclose the exact amount of the investment it is making, but Semafor reported earlier this month that the size could reach up to $10 billion.
The deal marks the third phase of collaboration between the two companies, with Microsoft having already invested twice more (2019 and 2021) in the rapidly evolving and promising artificial intelligence (AI) service.
“Our partnership with OpenAI is built around our shared ambition to responsibly advance AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
ChatGPT was first launched in late November, managing to amass one million users in less than a week.Its mimicry of human conversation has sparked speculation about its potential to replace professional writers and even threaten Google’s core search business.
“Behind” ChatGPT are a number of investors, such as Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Microsoft, as mentioned above, has already invested about 1 billion dollars, while the cloud service “Azure” – owned by Microsoft – acts as the exclusive provider of OpenAI.
Microsoft has previously invested about $1 billion in OpenAI. It is also working to add ChatGPT to its Bing search engine, seeking a competitive edge against dominant Alphabet. The bot is able to answer questions in a natural and human way.
